Years of discipline, diet, and relentless training build physiques that look carved from stone.
And then there are the men who stand head and shoulders above the rest — quite literally.
This is the tallest end of bodybuilding history: only men who actually competed on a bodybuilding stage are ranked here, tallest first, with every height checked against sources.
That rule matters, because the old version of this list mixed real competitors with famous giants who never posed in a contest. Two of its biggest names are gone for that reason — see the note near the end.
Why Height Is Not an Advantage 🏔️
New fans often assume the tallest, biggest man on stage must win. In bodybuilding, that is a myth.
Judges reward symmetry, proportion, conditioning, and flow — not altitude. A taller frame means far more muscle to build, and long legs especially are brutally hard to fill out.
That is why no man over 6 feet 2 inches has ever won an IFBB Pro League open show, and why most Mr. Olympia champions stand between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 11 inches.
Height gets a giant noticed. It has almost never got one the trophy. The men below are the exceptions who made it work anyway.
The Tallest Competitive Bodybuilders of All Time
1. Aaron W Reed — 6 ft 7 in (200.6 cm) 🥇
At 6 feet 7 inches, Aaron W Reed is the tallest man ever to build a real competitive bodybuilding career.
He won the 2001 NPC Mr. Teen Colorado, then kept collecting super-heavyweight titles, including the 2010 NPC Florida State crown and the 2011 NPC Orlando Metropolitan Men’s Physique overall.
One correction matters: Reed never held an IFBB pro card, so every title on his record is an amateur NPC title. He later moved into wrestling and acting, most recently as Juggernaut on screen.

2. Ralf Moeller — 6 ft 6 in (198 cm) 🇩🇪
Ralf Moeller is the tallest man ever to compete at the Mr. Olympia — and he did it at 6 feet 6 inches.
The German won his national title in 1983 and his class at the 1986 IFBB World Championships, then stood on the 1988 Olympia stage itself.
Like so many tall bodybuilders, he then found a second career in acting, most famously as Hagen in Gladiator (2000).
3. Lou Ferrigno — 6 ft 5 in (195.6 cm) 💚
Lou Ferrigno is the most successful very tall bodybuilder who ever lived — and the old version of this list somehow left him out.
At 6 feet 5 inches, he won the IFBB Mr. America in 1973 and the IFBB Mr. Universe in 1973 and 1974, then finished second to Arnold Schwarzenegger at the 1974 Mr. Olympia.
He returned in his forties to finish 12th at the 1992 Olympia and 10th in a loaded 1993 field. The photo above shows him in Hollywood in 2018, long after his stage career.
4. Jamie Christian-Johal — 6 ft 5 in (195.6 cm) 🏴
Jamie Christian-Johal, “The Giant” of the UK’s Gladiators, is the tallest Englishman on this list at 6 feet 5 inches.
He earned his pro card in 2018 in classic physique and later moved up to open bodybuilding in the IFBB Pro League, competing at over 300 pounds.
His shoulder width and shoulder-to-waist ratio were freakish even by pro standards — but his long legs, the classic tall-man problem, kept him from breaking through at the top level.

5. Greg Kovacs — 6 ft 4 in (193 cm) 🇨🇦
Greg Kovacs was not just tall — he was the biggest pro bodybuilder of his era.
At 6 feet 4 inches, the Canadian weighed around 330 pounds on stage and a reported 420 pounds in the off-season after winning the 1996 Canadian Nationals.
He never cracked the top placings at the Arnold Classic or Olympia, but nobody who saw him on stage ever forgot him.
6. Quincy Taylor — 6 ft 4 in (193 cm) 💪
Quincy Taylor — spelled Taylor, not “Tailor” as the old article had it — turned pro by winning the 2001 USA Championships.
At 6 feet 4 inches and around 300 pounds in contest shape, he competed in the 2005 and 2007 Mr. Olympias and finished second twice in pro shows.
By contest success alone, he ranks second among the very tall pros — behind only Lou Ferrigno.
7. Roland Kickinger — 6 ft 4 in (193 cm) 🎬
Roland Kickinger peaked early: 7th place in his pro debut at the 1996 Ironman Pro, at 6 feet 4 inches.
The Austrian, like his countryman Schwarzenegger, then moved toward acting — including playing a young Arnold in the TV movie See Arnold Run (2005).
His other eight pro shows landed near the bottom of the placings, a reminder of how hard tall frames are to judge against compact ones.
8. Sean Allan — 6 ft 4 in (193 cm) 🌟
“Big Sean” Allan brought WWE-style hype to bodybuilding, famously calling out the world’s best pros at an Olympia press conference while still an amateur.
At 6 feet 4 inches, he took 16 attempts to crack a pro qualifier, with critics pointing at his lagging legs — then won the 2011 Masters North American to turn pro.
His best pro result came at the 2012 Masters Olympia, where he finished 15th. Like the tall-man pattern, his width was extreme and his lower body never quite caught up.
Famous Giants NOT on This List 🚫
Two names from the old list are removed, deliberately. Martyn Ford, listed at 6 feet 8 inches, has never posed on a bodybuilding stage — he is an actor and fitness personality, not a competitive bodybuilder.
Olivier Richters, listed at 7 feet 2 inches, holds a Guinness record as the world’s tallest bodybuilder, but he has never posed in a competition either. A physique record is not a contest career.
Both men are giants. Neither belongs on a list of competitive bodybuilders, so neither is ranked here.
A Note on Three More 6 ft 6 in Men 📝
Three verified 6-foot-6 competitors — England’s Josh Maley, the Czech Republic’s Pavel Szotkowski, and America’s Noah Steere — would tie Ralf Moeller at the top of the pro ranks.
They are not ranked here because no verified free photo of any of the three could be found, and this site does not rank a man it cannot picture. If photos are sourced, they join the list at 6 feet 6 inches.
What Height Wins the Mr. Olympia? 🏆
The shortest man to win the Olympia is Franco Columbu at 5 feet 5 inches. The tallest is Arnold Schwarzenegger at 6 feet 2 inches.
Between those two extremes, almost every winner sits in the 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-11 band — the sweet spot where a frame can be filled out completely, top to bottom.
That is the real lesson of this list. In bodybuilding, the eye rewards balance, and balance gets harder with every extra inch — which is exactly why these eight giants are worth remembering.
