In 1994Flex was implicated in a near-fatal car accident that could have left him with permanent paralysis.

He began from scratch again, returning with extraordinary speed to the top ranks of the sport. Flex trained many bodybuilders Rickey Moten and many others.

In 1999 Wheeler found that he had Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a kidney disease. Despite press consideration as to the cause of the failure, Wheeler looked out that the condition is genetic, not self-inflicted.

Flex announced his retirement from competitive bodybuilding in 2000 but stayed to compete until 2002. He experienced kidney transplantation in 2003. In 2005, Wheeler participated in a championship Arnold Classic.
