Maxx Charles is one of bodybuilding’s most recognisable mass monsters. 💪
Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, he went on to become an IFBB professional bodybuilder and a four-time Mr. Olympia competitor.
His story is not about an easy rise. It is about a long, stubborn climb from a tough childhood to the biggest stage in the sport.
From Haiti to New York 🇭🇹
Maxx Charles was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where he grew up with an older brother and a younger sister.
Life there was hard, and when he was just one year old, his father travelled to New York to find work and build a better life for the family.
His father worked in New York for nine years before he could bring the whole family over.
Maxx met his father again at the age of 10, after nine years apart — a reunion that shaped his drive for the rest of his life.
After moving to New York, he was inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger’s movie physique and set his sights on building a body like his idol’s.
That dream pointed in one direction: the Mr. Olympia stage, the contest Arnold himself had made famous. Read about the man who set that standard in our Arnold Schwarzenegger biography.
The Long Road to a Pro Card 🏋️
Maxx did not rush into competition. He spent years building size in the gym before he ever stepped on stage.
His amateur breakthrough came at the 2008 NPC Eastern USA, where he won the super-heavyweight class.
He then finished 2nd at the 2011 NPC National Championships and 3rd at the 2012 NPC USA Championships.
The big moment arrived in 2013, when he won the NPC USA Championships and earned his IFBB pro card.

Breaking Through as a Pro ⭐
Maxx made his pro mark quickly, finishing 5th at the 2014 New York Pro and 4th at the 2014 Tampa Pro.
In 2015, everything clicked. He finished 3rd at the New York Pro, then won the Tampa Pro — his first IFBB pro victory.
That win took him to his first Mr. Olympia later in 2015, where he placed 12th in a stacked open lineup.
It remains his best Olympia finish, a fact worth stating plainly: he has never placed in the Olympia top 10, and he has never won the Mr. Olympia title.
Olympia Regular, Fan Favourite ❤️
Maxx kept grinding through the pro circuit, finishing 3rd at the 2017 Arnold Classic and 2nd at the 2017 Arnold Classic Australia.
He returned to the Olympia in 2017 and placed 13th, again proving he belonged among the world’s best open bodybuilders.
In 2018, after three 3rd-place finishes that year at the Muscle Mayhem Pro, Tampa Pro and George Farah Classic, he won the Romania Muscle Fest Pro.
That victory — confirmed in the official NPC contest results, where he beat Clarence De Vis into 2nd — earned him another Olympia qualification.

He competed at the Olympia again in 2019 (13th) and 2020 (13th), making it four Olympia appearances in total.
His 2020 season also included 3rd at the Chicago Pro, 2nd at the California Pro and a much-debated 5th at the New York Pro.
Many fans felt he deserved higher in New York that year, and his coach Milos Sarcev said so publicly — but the official result stands at 5th.
Still Competing Into the 2020s 🔥
Maxx did not fade away after 2020. He placed 3rd at the 2021 Chicago Pro and 4th at the 2021 Tampa Pro.
In 2022, he finished 3rd at the New York Pro behind winner Blessing Awodibu and runner-up Andrea Presti.
His latest verified pro result is 6th at the 2023 New York Pro, behind winner Tonio Burton.
No verified pro contest result for Maxx Charles in 2024, 2025 or 2026 was found while preparing this refresh, and no retirement announcement was found either.
So the honest 2026 position is this: a veteran still in the picture as recently as 2023, with his current status unconfirmed rather than assumed.

Why Fans Love Maxx Charles 🙌
Maxx is famous for his enormous arms, shoulders and chest, and for an unorthodox, instinctive style of training.
He is the kind of bodybuilder other bodybuilders respect — a “bodybuilder’s bodybuilder” known for condition and sheer mass.
He never won the Olympia, but reaching it four times from where he started is an achievement few athletes ever match.
His career sits in a long line of Olympia greats. For the standard every open bodybuilder chases, see our Lee Haney biography and our top 10 legendary bodybuilders who defied time.
