Mike Thurston Biography 2026: Height, Weight, Age, Workout & Coaching

💪 Mike Thurston is one of Britain’s best-known fitness coaches — a Leeds lad who turned a love of lifting into a global online coaching business.

He is not a professional bodybuilder, and this article says so plainly. Thurston stepped on stage just twice, in 2014 and 2015, then walked away from competing and built his career as a coach, creator and entrepreneur instead.

That honesty is part of his appeal. His audience follows him for realistic, stay-lean-all-year training advice — not for contest placings he never chased.

Early Life in Leeds 🏴󐁧󐁢󐁥󐁮󐁧󐁿

Mike Thurston was born on 9 August 1990 and grew up in Leeds, Yorkshire, where sport came first.

As a schoolboy he played rugby, cricket and football, with rugby the game he loved most. It was rugby training that first put a barbell in his hands.

He did not start lifting seriously until he was 18, working out in his school gym in 2008. The goal was simple: build a stronger, more athletic body.

After school he went to Newcastle University, where he studied economics and business management and graduated in 2011.

The Party Years — and the Turning Point 🎉

University life pulled Thurston in the opposite direction for a while. Nights out, alcohol and junk food took over, and his training slipped.

At 21 he moved to Spain to work as a bar and nightclub promoter, a job built around partying. Remarkably, his physique held up — something he has always put down to good genetics.

But the lifestyle wore thin. Back in England he took a job as a manager at Hollister, working there from January 2012 to March 2013.

The retail job left him drained and unfulfilled. So in early 2013 he made the leap: he qualified as a personal trainer and decided to build a career in fitness.

Building Aurora Athletic and THRST 🚀

In April 2013, Thurston teamed up with his business partner Kyle to launch Aurora Athletic, a health and fitness company.

Social media did the rest. Training videos and physique updates built an audience that kept growing, and coaching clients followed.

Then, in October 2016, he launched his own brand: THRST. It now covers online coaching through the THRST app — with dozens of training programmes and hundreds of meal options — plus a THRST clothing line.

He also hosts the First Things THRST podcast, talking training, business and the fitness industry with guests from across the sport.

His recent content is filmed largely in Dubai, where he has spent much of his adult life, and he was still publishing fresh coaching content through 2026 — including a leg-training guide and a fat-loss series covered by fitness media that year.

His Real Contest Record 🏆

Here is the part most old profiles get wrong: Thurston is not a competitive bodybuilder. He has said so himself, in his own words, in interviews.

He competed exactly twice. The first time, in 2014, he placed third. He had no coach and designed his own training and diet, and he has described that prep as the most disciplined stretch of his life.

The second time, in 2015, he entered a WBFF muscle-model class. He was up against much bigger, enhanced rivals in an untested federation, did not place, and decided competing was not for him.

He has said he would only ever return to the stage for a fully drug-tested natural show. He has never held an IFBB Pro card, so he has never stood on the Mr. Olympia stage or at the Arnold Classic — in Ohio or in the UK.

For contrast, a genuine Olympia-stage career looks very different — Kai Greene’s biography shows what years of pro competition actually involve, and Thurston even trained arms alongside Greene in a session covered on this site: Kai Greene and Mike Thurston’s intense arms training.

Training Style 🏋️

Thurston trains on a classic push, pull and legs split, hitting each muscle group around twice a week.

His sessions mix heavy compound lifts — presses, rows, squats and deadlift patterns — with isolation work for arms, shoulders and abs.

His 2026 coaching message is deliberately simple: a small calorie deficit, two or three well-planned weight sessions a week, and daily steps that build gradually.

He argues that most people fail by chasing too many goals at once, cutting out everything they enjoy, or copying extreme “movie montage” training plans they cannot sustain.

His full structured programmes live inside the THRST app rather than in free posts — which is why this article gives his approach, not a fake week-by-week plan.

Diet and Supplements 🥗

Thurston eats around five to six meals a day built on lean protein, complex carbs and plenty of vegetables.

Chicken or salmon with sweet potato or rice and vegetables is his staple meal, and he trims carbs later in the day when he is leaning out.

His 2026 fat-loss advice centres on protein at roughly 2.2 grams per kilogram of bodyweight, with fats kept at a minimum of around 50–60 grams a day for hormone health.

On supplements he keeps it basic: whey protein, BCAAs, omega-3 fish oil and vitamin D3. Readers comparing products can start with our guide to the best protein powders for strength athletes.

His detailed day-by-day eating plan is covered separately in our Mike Thurston diet plan and workout routine post.

Life Outside the Gym 🌍

Thurston has always kept his private life private. He does not publicise relationships, and this article makes no claim about his marital status.

One personal detail he has shared openly: he had an FUE hair transplant in 2019 and documented the procedure and the results on his YouTube channel.

He has also addressed the steroid question directly, saying he has never taken steroids — that is his own statement, reported here as his own words, not as an independently verified fact.

Unlike Classic Physique pros still chasing Olympia qualification — such as Mike Sommerfeld, who has finished runner-up at three straight Classic Olympias — Thurston’s arena is coaching, content and business.
