Shun Kaneko — known to millions of fans as Kanekin — is a Japanese IFBB Pro League athlete in the Men’s Physique division and one of the most recognisable faces in Asian fitness. 🇯🇵
Long before he was a pro, he was Japan’s favourite fitness teacher: the man behind the Kanekin Fitness YouTube channel and the KANEKIN FITNESS GYM.
But Kaneko is no influencer who dabbles in contests. He owns three professional titles, has stood on the Mr. Olympia stage three times, and in 2026 he was still winning shows and qualifying for the Olympia. ✅
This biography has been fully rebuilt from official contest records — and it corrects several errors in the older version of this page, starting with his division, his age and how he earned his pro card.

🏆 Who Is Shun Kaneko?
Kaneko is a Men’s Physique professional — the board-shorts division judged on an athletic, aesthetic upper body, a tight waist and polished presentation. He is not a Classic Physique athlete, despite what some older profiles claim.
What sets him apart is the double life he has built. On stage, he is a three-time pro champion. Online, he is “Kanekin,” one of Japan’s biggest fitness YouTubers, whose Kanekin Fitness channel has hundreds of thousands of subscribers. 📺
He is, quite simply, the YouTuber who out-poses the pros — a creator who backed up the content with scorecards, year after year, on stages from Tokyo to Toronto.
🎸 From Guitarist and YouTuber to the Stage
Kaneko’s first career was not bodybuilding at all. Japanese profiles tell how the Kashiwa-born athlete — the son of an American father and a Japanese mother — first worked as a professional guitarist in the band KANDO BANDO.
When the band split, he launched the Kanekin Fitness YouTube channel in November 2014, teaching training to beginners with a musician’s sense of timing and editing. The channel took off, and his own physique transformed along with it. 🎥
He began competing on Japan’s NPCJ amateur circuit around 2016. In 2018 he travelled to Bermuda for the Caribbean Grand Prix pro qualifier and won his Men’s Physique class — a first taste of international competition.
🎟️ The Pro Card: Bermuda, 2019
Kaneko returned to Bermuda in 2019 and finished the job. He won the Men’s Physique overall title at the 2019 Caribbean Grand Prix — and with it, his IFBB Pro card. 🏆
That is the verified route to his pro status. The claim in the old version of this page — that he “earned his pro card with a 3rd-place finish at the Daytona Pro” — is not how pro cards work and is not supported by any record. It has been removed.
His pro debut was delayed by the pandemic years, and Japanese reports say a planned home appearance at the 2021 Tokyo Pro was lost to a COVID-19 infection. When he finally took the pro stage in 2022, he made up for lost time in a hurry.
🥇 2022: The Tokyo Pro Title and an Olympia Debut
Kaneko opened his pro career in the United States, placing 6th at the 2022 Chicago Pro in a field won by Nick Koeu — an early sign he could stand with American pros.
Then came the homecoming. At the 2022 Tokyo Pro, Kaneko beat a strong Japanese field — Edward Masato Kato second, Tomohito “Jin” Koike third — to claim his first professional title. 🥇
The win carried him to the 2022 Mr. Olympia in Las Vegas, the largest Men’s Physique field in Olympia history at the time. Kaneko finished in the tied-16th group on his debut — a foundation to build on.
📈 2023–2024: The Grind Years
In 2023 Kaneko defended his home stage, finishing 2nd at the Tokyo Pro behind the Philippines’ Joven Sagabain, and travelled to California to place 11th at the Pacific USA Pro.
The 2024 season was pure mileage: 6th at the St. Pete Pro in Florida, 6th again at the Tokyo Pro Supershow, and 7th at the Mexico Grand Battle Pro. No titles — but top-seven finishes on three different stages in three different countries. ✈️
It is the pattern of his whole career: Kaneko keeps collecting passport stamps and scorecards in equal measure, and the wins tend to arrive right after the near-misses.
🔥 2025: Taiwan Glory and a Second Olympia
Kaneko’s 2025 season was his busiest yet. He placed 4th at the Legion Sports Fest Pro in Reno, then 2nd at the Toronto Pro Supershow — beaten only by Drew Cullen — and 5th at the Body Be 1 Classic Pro in Alabama.
The breakthrough came in Kaohsiung. On July 18–20, 2025, Kaneko won the Taiwan Pro 2 with a perfect score, earning his second Olympia qualification. The old version of this page credited him with winning the Body Be 1 Pro that year — he actually placed 5th there; Taiwan was the win. ✅
He added a 4th place at the Japan Pro, behind winner Juxian He and fellow Japanese pro Farouq Ishimoto, then returned to Las Vegas for the 2025 Mr. Olympia, finishing in the tied-16th group alongside countrymen Jo Uezato and Junpei Taguchi.

🟢 Shun Kaneko in 2026: Still Winning, Still at the Olympia
Any question about Kaneko’s status has a simple answer: he is an active IFBB Pro, coming off one of the best seasons of his career.
In 2026 he went back to Toronto — the show where he was runner-up in 2025 — and won the Toronto Pro Supershow outright, beating Drew Cullen, the man who had beaten him a year earlier. The win qualified him for his third Mr. Olympia. 🏆
He added a 3rd place at the 2026 Legion Sports Fest Pro, in a top three led by Junpei Taguchi, and in September 2026 he stood on the Olympia stage in Las Vegas for the third time, finishing in the tied-16th group in a 51-man field won by Ryan Terry.
At 37, Kaneko remains what he has been for a decade: Japan’s bridge between the YouTube era and the Olympia stage — and, as the men he shares that stage with, like Edvan Palmeira, can testify, a pro who simply never stops showing up. 💪
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is Shun Kaneko a Classic Physique or Men’s Physique athlete?
Men’s Physique. Every official result of his career — the Tokyo Pro, Taiwan Pro 2, Toronto Pro Supershow and his three Mr. Olympia appearances — is in the Men’s Physique division. Claims that he competes in Classic Physique are incorrect.
How did Shun Kaneko earn his IFBB Pro Card?
By winning the Men’s Physique overall title at the 2019 Caribbean Grand Prix pro qualifier in Bermuda. He had won his class at the same event in 2018. He did not earn his card at the Daytona Pro, as the old version of this page claimed.
How many times has Shun Kaneko competed at Mr. Olympia?
Three times: 2022, 2025 and 2026. He qualified each time by winning a pro show — the Tokyo Pro (2022), the Taiwan Pro 2 (2025) and the Toronto Pro Supershow (2026) — and finished in the tied-16th group on all three appearances.
How old is Shun Kaneko, and how tall is he?
Japanese profile sources consistently report that he was born on 21 February 1989 in Kashiwa, Chiba, which makes him 37 years old in 2026, and list his height at about 172 cm. The IFBB Pro League does not publish an official birth date or height for him, so these figures are presented as reported, not as official records. The old version of this page said he was born in 1995 — that was wrong.
What is Shun Kaneko’s biggest win?
He has three professional titles: the 2022 Tokyo Pro in front of his home crowd, the 2025 Taiwan Pro 2 (won with a perfect score) and the 2026 Toronto Pro Supershow. The Tokyo win is arguably the most famous, as it made him Japan’s Men’s Physique champion on home soil.
Is Shun Kaneko still competing in 2026?
Yes. He won the 2026 Toronto Pro Supershow, placed 3rd at the 2026 Legion Sports Fest Pro, and competed at the 2026 Mr. Olympia on September 26, 2026. There is no retirement announcement — he remains one of Japan’s most active pros, alongside his Kanekin Fitness channel and gym business.
🔥 Final Thoughts
A guitarist who became a YouTuber, a YouTuber who became a pro, and a pro who — seven years after earning his card in Bermuda — was still winning shows and walking onto the Olympia stage.
Shun Kaneko’s record is not built on one magic season. It is built on turning up, everywhere, every year, until the scorecards agree with him.
Tokyo, Taiwan, Toronto — three titles, three Olympias, and counting. 🇯🇵
